What we found:

Step 3: Checking pump/motor compatibility
As the pump/motor unit had already been replaced by another workshop, we needed to confirm whether the installed part was compatible with this specific vehicle.
- We cross-checked the fitted part number against Volkswagen’s EPC using the vehicle’s VIN and build data
- We also reviewed variant compatibility, as some VW Polo models used different steering systems that are not interchangeable
- A visually similar part with the wrong internal specification can trigger fault code 00816 if the system does not recognise the signal format
What we found:
The part that had been installed didn’t match what this vehicle was originally built with. As a result, the steering module was receiving data in an unexpected format, triggering fault code 00816 and disabling the power steering function.
Step 4: Checking programming and coding status
Even if the correct version is fitted, the module must be programmed to the vehicle before the system can interpret the sensor data.

What we found:
The pump/motor had not been coded. Without this step, the steering module could not interpret the signal from the G250 sensor, and the system had disabled assistance as a safety measure.

Correct Part, Correct Setup: Restoring Power Steering in One Visit
With the cause confirmed, we explained our findings to Mr H and outlined the next steps. Once he approved the repair, we moved ahead with the work.
- We sourced the correct pump/motor unit by referencing the vehicle’s VIN through Volkswagen’s parts database.
