What are the minimum legal tread levels? And how do I measure this?
The UK’s legal minimum requirement for tyre tread is 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of your tyre. However, many tyre manufacturers recommend that the tyre is replaced before they get this low to ensure that your car stops effectively in the wet.
Gauge devices are used to measure the exact tread remaining on your tyre. But if you don’t have access to one of these and are concerned about your tyre tread, you can check your tread with a 20p.
Simply place a 20p into the lowest tread depth of your tyre. If you can no longer see the outer rim, your tyre should be above the minimum. If you can see the edge, your tread is below 3mm and should be checked as soon as possible.
Seeing the 20p rim would mean you are driving on illegal tyres. And please remember that unless you are prepared to test all the treads on all your tyres, the test would not be reliable, and your tyres could still run the risk of an accident and fines.

However, if it’s beyond repair we will advise you, afterall your safety is our priority.
How to check your tyre pressure?
The correct tyre pressures will be shown inside the driver’s door or inside your fuel cap.
To check your current tyre pressure, firstly, remove the dust cap from the tyre valve and place the pressure gauge onto the value. Then gently pressing down with the gauge on the valve stem will give you a reading.
If you need to reinflate your tyres, set the machine to the stated recommended pressure and keep the gauge on the value, the machine will do the rest. If you are unsure or require help with this, give us a call, and we’ll be happy to help.
When your new tyres are fitted, don’t forget to have your wheels aligned. Wheel alignment is key to ensuring that your wheels and tyres are tracking correctly and giving you maximum control over your vehicle. To find out more, check out our wheel alignment page.
