Top Tips to Pass Your MOT First Time

As a vehicle owner, passing your MOT Test can be a nerve-wracking experience. The MOT Test is a mandatory annual check-up that ensures your car is safe to be on the road and meets the minimum environmental standards set by the government.

Failing your MOT can lead to costly repairs, as well as the inconvenience of being unable to drive your car until it passes. But fear not, Cheltenham and Gloucester Autocentre is here to help.

In this blog, we will provide you with essential tips and a comprehensive checklist to help you prepare for your MOT Test, increasing your chances of passing it the first time. From ensuring your Lights are working correctly to checking your Tyres’ condition, we have got you covered. So, let’s dive in and get your car ready for its MOT Test!

What is an MOT?

An MOT Test is an annual inspection that is required by law in the UK for vehicles that are more than three years old.

During the test, your vehicle will be examined to ensure that it meets minimum environmental and road safety standards.

A qualified tester inspects your vehicle’s Brakes, Steering, Suspension, Tyres, Lights, and Emissions during an MOT. In the case that your vehicle meets the minimum standards, the tester will issue an MOT certificate, which is valid for one year. A vehicle that does not meet the standards must be repaired and retested before it can be legally driven on the road.

The MOT Test ensures that all vehicles on the road meet basic safety and environmental requirements.

Despite the fact that an MOT Test covers many components of a vehicle, it does not assess the Engine, Gearbox, or Clutch. In some cases, passing the MOT Test does not guarantee that the vehicle will remain safe to drive for the duration of the certificate. The maintenance of your vehicle is crucial, and you should look out for any signs of problems.

Getting your car serviced and MOT’d at the same time is a smart decision that can save you time, money, and ensure your vehicle is roadworthy for longer. Regular servicing and MOT Testing are both essential in maintaining your car’s safety, reliability, and efficiency.

So, if you want to keep your car in top condition, book a combined Service and MOT Test with Cheltenham & Gloucester Autocentre today. Our expert mechanics will ensure your car is running smoothly and efficiently, so you can enjoy the road ahead with confidence.

MOT Certificates: Why Do You Need Them?

An MOT certificate is a legal requirement in the UK if your vehicle is more than three years old.

After your vehicle passes an annual MOT Test, the certificate is issued. It certifies that the vehicle meets the minimum road safety and environmental standards.

You could be fined, get penalty points, or even have your vehicle impounded if you drive without a valid MOT certificate. Further, you must have a valid MOT certificate to obtain road tax and maintain your car insurance.

Furthermore, a valid MOT certificate proves that your vehicle is roadworthy and ensures your safety and that of other road users. In order to ensure your vehicle remains safe to drive, you should schedule an MOT Test and have any necessary repairs made promptly.

In Order to Pass My Vehicle’s MOT, What Should I Check?

how to pass your mot

By following our MOT checklist, you’ll give your vehicle the best chance of passing the first time, saving you money. Your chances of passing your MOT the first time will be better if you follow the checklist below.

  • Front Lights

Make sure your Front Lights are working properly by cleaning and inspecting them. You should check your Side Lights (normally the first position on your light switch), Dip Beam, and Main Beam. Lastly, check your Indicator Lights, Fog Lamps and Hazard Lights.

  • Rear Lights

You will need assistance from someone you know when checking your Rear Lights. Press the Brake Pedal and ensure all Brake Lights work, including a high-level Strip Light if fitted. Last but not least, check your Indicator Lights, Hazard Lights, Fog Lamps, Reverse Lights and Number Plate Lights.

  • Number Plates

Make sure both Number Plates are clean. Wiping them with a cloth will make a huge difference if they’re not. You should ensure that a private Plate meets the legal requirements regarding font and spacing.

  • Wheels and Tyres

Make sure your Wheels and Tyres are in good shape by checking them regularly.

There is a minimum legal tread depth of 1.6mm. It’ll fail if a tyre is below this across the centre ¾ of the tread width (around the entire circumference).

  • Seats and Seatbelts

It is necessary for the driver’s seat to be able to move forward and backwards. Additionally, your seat should be able to be locked in place. As well as ensuring that your Seat Belts are secure, locked into position, and retractable when necessary, make sure they are free from damage.

Lastly, make sure the buckle latches in the locking mechanism and releases as needed.

  • Windscreen

Ensure no damage is bigger than 10mm in the driver’s line of sight or 40mm where the Wipers sweep the screen. Check your insurance for any damage larger than the recommended size since you may have a windscreen cover, and you may be able to remedy the problem before bringing your vehicle to us.

  • Washers and Wipers

Make sure your Washers have enough fluid to clean the screen. You should also check your Wiper Blades for tears or holes since any damage could result in failure. In case you need a replacement or have an issue, we stock all common sizes at Cheltenham & Gloucester Autocentre.

  • Horn

If you press your Horn you should be able to sound a loud warning to other road users. You must ensure yours is close to standard, as sirens, musical horns, bells and twin tone sounds are not allowed.

  • Oil and Fuel Levels

Your engine must be running while your MOT is being performed. Check your Oil Level before starting the test (refer to your owner’s manual for instructions).

You should also ensure that you have enough Fuel in your vehicle to make it through the test.

  • Warning Lights

As you turn the Ignition on, Warning Lights will illuminate and extinguish. Some of these are covered in an MOT.

Finally, please make sure that you don’t have Warning Lights on for your Safety Restraint, Anti-lock Braking System, Electronic Stability Control System, Engine Management Systems and Tyre Pressure monitoring.
