In this blog, we will take a look into the common causes of a rough idling Engine and what we can do to fix it.
So read on to find out more…

What is a rough idle, and is it a cause for concern?
Rough idling occurs when your Volkswagen shakes and vibrates and doesn’t sound like its usual self. The Engine usually will maintain a constant speed when stationary and parked up. This is indicated by your RPM gauge on your Dashboard and normal operation is between 600 and 1000 rpm.
If your car is rough idling you will experience the following:
- Idle speed below 600 or above 1000 rpm when parked.
- More vibrations and shaking of the Engine.
- Random stalling or backfiring – hearing loud bangs and pops.
If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, we recommend you visit a specialist VW garage, like us here at Cheltenham and Gloucester Autocentre, for expert help. Our team of technicians are on hand to diagnose and fix your rough idling issue. There could be a simple fix and you could be on your way the same day, or if left alone it could grow to a bigger, more costly issue later down the line.
Common causes of idling in your Volkswagen
Idling issues in a Volkswagen can be caused by various factors, and the specific cause can vary depending on the model, year, and Engine type. However, some common causes of idling problems in Volkswagen vehicles include:
-
Vacuum leak:
The Engine may have more airflow than usual due to a vacuum leak. The Engine has lots of hoses that create a vacuum to let the air seal tightly and mix with fuel in the Cylinders. The Vacuum Hoses are made from rubber or rubber-like materials and can break down over time causing leaks. Increased air within the Engine causes a lean air-fuel mixture and leads to misfires, poor acceleration and rough idling.
Listen out for a hissing sound when the vehicle is parked up and your Engine is switched on. The Vacuum Hose can be replaced once identified.
-
Blocked Air Filter:
Your Volkswagen’s Engine needs filtered air to prevent unwanted dust and debris in the Cylinders. The Air Filter is made from a paper-like material and can sometimes become blocked with leaves, dust and other debris which restricts airflow.
A dirty and worn-out Air Filter will need replacing. The Air Filter should also be replaced at every service interval.
-
Damaged Spark Plugs or Ignition Coil:
Over time Spark Plugs become dirty and covered in carbon deposits, rendering them less effective. Your Engine may be running rough because of an old defective Spark Plug. Spark Plugs are used during the ignition phase of an Engine running cycle to ignite the fuel and air in the combustion chamber. If your Spark Plugs are okay, your Ignition Coil could be another reason why you’re experiencing rough idling.
At Cheltenham and Gloucester Autocentre we recommend letting trained professionals remove and inspect your Spark Plugs and Ignition Coils, advising if they need to be replaced.
-
Fuel Injector Issue:
If your Fuel Injectors get clogged or no longer function, the fuel will not be delivered to the combustion chamber thus causing rough idling. Each Injector is carefully engineered and programmable to deliver the precise amount of fuel needed to efficiently run the Engine.
A Fuel Filter replacement is the first step to fix Injector issues, as this could be the main problem. Injector cleaning treatments are also available, they are mixed with fuel and pass through the Injectors to clean them. But if the issue persists, you may need to have your Injectors replaced to fix rough idling. This should only be performed by a fully qualified mechanic.
-
Fuel Pump Malfunction:
The cause of rough idling may originate from the initial fuel delivery – the Fuel Pump. If not enough fuel is delivered to the Injectors then your Engine performance is reduced, causing rough idling.
A fuel system cleaner could fix the issue, otherwise, if the problem persists then a replacement pump may be required.
-
Broken O2 Sensor:
Your O2 Sensor plays a vital role in determining the rate of flow of oxygen into the Engine and out of the Exhausts. This allows your Volkswagen Engine Control Unit (ECU) to adjust the right fuel mixture for the air that’s in the Combustion Chamber.
The O2 Sensors are located under the car along the Exhaust system. They can be removed and inspected and if they are damaged then they may need replacing. Once again, we recommend letting a VW specialist technician carry out this job for you.
-
Faulty Throttle Position Switch (TPS):
The Throttle Switch or Position Sensor is attached to the Throttle body. It keeps track of the location of the Throttle and the ECU adjusts the air-fuel mixture and timing for igniting the fuel. Any fault with the Sensor could cause incorrect readings and therefore an idling Engine.
As it is a difficult task to remove and replace, at Cheltenham and Gloucester Autocentre we recommend consulting our team of experts to identify and fix your rough idling issue and determine whether your Throttle Position Sensor needs replacing.
