Engine Management Warning Caused By AdBlue Fault On BMW X6
(Error Code: 26F500 / 2AC600)
The BMW X6 is a luxury SUV that promises to deliver both style and performance. However, like any vehicle, it can suffer from problems that require the attention of an expert.
One common issue faced by BMW owners is an AdBlue system malfunction.
The AdBlue system helps reduce emissions from diesel engines, but a malfunction can cause major headaches for drivers. Fortunately, our experts at Cheltenham & Gloucester Autocentre were able to diagnose and fix this issue on a recent customer’s BMW, leaving the X6 running smoothly once again. In this blog, we’ll take a closer look at what caused the AdBlue issue in this BMW X6 and the steps that were taken to repair it.
At Cheltenham & Gloucester Autocentre, our team of skilled technicians is dedicated to maintaining the safety and performance of your vehicle. We understand the importance of keeping your car in top condition and give you the peace of mind that we will treat it as if it were our own.

The Problem the Customer Faced
Mr. H, a BMW X6 owner, trusted us with his vehicle when he noticed warning lights on his dashboard. He chose us because of our reputation locally as German vehicle specialists and our transparent advice.
While driving his BMW X6, Mr. H noticed the Engine Management Light and a warning for the AdBlue system. The AdBlue system plays a crucial role in reducing harmful emissions in diesel vehicles by injecting a fine mist of solution into the exhaust system, triggering a chemical reaction that keeps emissions in line with legal standards.
However, a faulty AdBlue system can lead to costly repairs and the possibility of failing an MOT. At Cheltenham & Gloucester Autocentre, we will work to ensure your vehicle’s AdBlue system is functioning correctly, giving you peace of mind on the road.
Finding the root cause of the BMW AdBlue issue
Upon receiving the BMW at our garage, our team immediately began identifying the cause of the warning lights. To do this, we employed our trusted 15-step diagnostic process, which we have developed at Cheltenham & Gloucester Autocentre to accurately pinpoint issues for our customers.
The first step in this process is to check for error codes and potential software problems. In the case of the BMW X6, we discovered the following codes:
- 26F500 – Indicating that the efficiency of the SCR system is too low.
- 2AC600 – Indicating that the efficiency of the SCR system is too low and poor AdBlue quality has been detected.
These codes provided insight into the issue and helped us to move forward in our evaluation process.
After identifying the error codes, our team of experts focused their attention on the AdBlue system. They first checked the level of AdBlue in the system, which met the necessary requirements. They then examined the quality of the AdBlue solution, which also came back as ok.
However, our experts were not satisfied and needed to dig deeper. They conducted a thorough visual inspection of the BMW’s engine and undercarriage, but found nothing visibly wrong. The car was well-maintained, but they knew something was causing the issue.
They then proceeded to remove the AdBlue system injector to check the spray pattern. The injector was working properly, so they put it back together and moved on to testing the SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) system. The SCR is responsible for reducing harmful emissions, and it’s crucial that it’s functioning correctly.
During the SCR tests, they noticed a fault with the catalyst temperature sensor. The sensor was dropping in and out regularly, which resulted in incorrect temperature readings. These readings are necessary to ensure the system operates within the correct parameters for efficient conversion of NOx (Nitrogen Oxide) and meeting the legal limits of NOx efficiency.
With the problem identified, our team of expert technicians knew exactly what needed to be done to resolve the issue.
Testing > Diagnosis > Fix
With the problem identified as the temperature sensor, our team set to work on the repair. They began by replacing the faulty catalyst temperature sensor with a new one. Once the replacement was complete, they re-ran the SCR system tests to ensure the previous issue had been resolved.
The tests came back clear, and an extended road test confirmed that the car was running correctly.
Once they were satisfied that everything was working as it should, they reset the software, which cleared the warning lights on the BMW X6’s dashboard.
With the car fully repaired and back in top condition, our team was ready to return it to the client.
