Mercedes Oil Changes
Keeping your Mercedes-Benz in top condition requires staying on top of its Oil Change schedule. Failing to replace the Oil at recommended intervals can result in damage to the Engine, leading to expensive repairs.
At Cheltenham & Gloucester Autocentre, we know that Mercedes-Benz owners value the luxury and high performance of your vehicles. So to maintain their quality, it’s crucial to keep to regular Oil Changes.
The frequency of Oil Changes can vary based on factors like your specific Mercedes-Benz model, driving habits, and Oil type. In our latest blog post, we provide a guide to Mercedes-Benz Oil Changes, addressing all your questions and helping you determine the best intervals for your vehicle.
So, let’s get into it…

Engine Oil: Why It’s Important
Mercedes-Benz Engine Oil is vital for maintaining the performance and longevity of your vehicle’s Engine. It serves several important functions:
Lubrication: Engine Oil forms a protective layer between moving components, reducing friction and wear. This allows the Engine to operate smoothly and efficiently.
Cooling: As the Engine runs, it generates heat. Engine Oil helps dissipate this heat, preventing overheating and potential damage to the Engine.
Cleaning: Engine Oil contains detergents that help remove dirt, debris, and contaminants that can accumulate in the Engine over time. It helps keep the Engine clean and free from harmful deposits.
Sealing: Engine Oil forms a seal between the Piston Rings and the Cylinder Walls, preventing Combustion Gases from escaping. This ensures optimal Engine performance.
Regularly checking and changing the Oil is essential for maintaining the overall health of your Mercedes-Benz Engine.
Mercedes Benz Oil Change Intervals
In the first instance, it’s best to consult your Mercedes-Benz owner’s manual for guidance on Oil Change intervals. However, the recommended schedule depends on various factors.
Typically, Mercedes-Benz suggests getting an Oil Change once a year or after driving 10,000 miles, whichever comes first. Newer models may have a service indicator on the dashboard that alerts you when an Oil Change is needed.
Your driving style and conditions can also influence the Oil Change frequency. For example, if you primarily drive on smooth, flat roads, and don’t carry heavy loads or leave the Engine idling for extended periods, you may need an Oil Change every 7,500 to 10,000 miles. On the other hand, if you frequently drive in more testing conditions, like hilly areas, or you subject your vehicle to higher temperatures, or towing, it’s advisable to change the Oil every 5,000 to 7,500 miles.
For more demanding driving activities such as off-road or mountain driving, towing heavy loads, or driving in extreme temperatures for extended periods, a more frequent Oil Change interval of 3,000 to 5,000 miles may be recommended.
If you’re unsure about when your Oil should be changed, our experienced technicians at Cheltenham & Gloucester Autocentre can provide expert advice and deliver high-quality service at a great value.
Why You Shouldn’t Ignore Oil Changes
Ignoring an Oil Change can have serious consequences for your vehicle’s Engine. Here are a few reasons why you shouldn’t ignore an Oil Change:
Engine Damage: Over time, Engine Oil gets contaminated with dirt, debris, and metal particles. This can lead to increased friction and wear on Engine Components. Without regular Oil Changes, the Oil loses its lubricating properties, and the Engine Parts can grind against each other, causing damage and reducing performance.
Reduced Fuel Efficiency: Fresh, clean Oil helps reduce friction in the Engine, allowing it to run more efficiently. When the Oil becomes dirty and old, it thickens and can’t flow properly, resulting in decreased fuel efficiency and increased fuel consumption.
Engine Overheating: Engine Oil also helps in dissipating heat generated during Engine operation. As the Oil breaks down and becomes less effective, the Engine may overheat, leading to potential damage and even Engine failure.
Expensive Repairs: Neglecting Oil Changes can eventually lead to more severe Engine problems, such as worn-out Bearings, damaged Seals, or even Engine failure. The cost of repairing or replacing an Engine far exceeds the relatively low cost of regular Oil Changes.
Warranty Considerations: If your vehicle is under warranty, failing to follow the recommended maintenance schedule, including Oil Changes, could void the Warranty coverage. Regular Oil Changes show that you have properly maintained your vehicle, protecting your Warranty benefits.
To avoid any possible issues, it is crucial to follow the Oil Change schedule outlined in your Mercedes-Benz owner’s manual. Regular Oil Changes are essential for preserving the health and longevity of your Engine.

Synthetic or Conventional? Which Oil Is Better for Your Mercedes Benz?
Synthetic Oil is considered better for your Mercedes-Benz. It offers superior lubrication, stability, and protection compared to conventional Oil. Synthetic Oil maintains its thickness in extreme temperatures, keeps the Engine cleaner, and provides better performance. It therefore helps protect the Engine, improves fuel efficiency, and prolongs its lifespan.
On the other hand, Conventional Oil is derived from Crude Oil and goes through fewer refining processes. While it can still provide adequate lubrication for your Mercedes-Benz Engine, Conventional Oil may have limitations in terms of stability, protection, and performance compared to Synthetic Oil, particularly under demanding driving conditions or in extreme temperatures.
Mercedes-Benz generally recommends the use of Synthetic Oil in their vehicles to ensure optimal performance and longevity. They have been using Synthetic Engine Oil for their vehicles since 2010, while conventional Engine Oil was the norm for models predating this year.
You can find out which Oil your Mercedes-Benz needs by referring to your Owner’s Manual or by talking to our specialists at Cheltenham & Gloucester Autocentre.

What Happens During Mercedes Benz Oil Changes?
Here’s what usually happens when you bring your Mercedes-Benz in for an Oil Change at Cheltenham & Gloucester Autocentre:
Preparation: The vehicle is positioned on a lift or raised using a jack to gain access to the underside of the Engine. The Bonnet is also opened to access the Engine compartment.
Draining the old Oil: The technician removes the Drain Plug from the Oil Pan, allowing the old Oil to drain out completely. This ensures that all the old Oil and any dirt and debris are removed from the Engine.
Removing and replacing the Oil filter: The old Oil Filter is removed, and a new one is then installed in its place. The Oil Filter is responsible for removing impurities and contaminants from the Oil as it circulates through the Engine.
Adding new Oil: Once the old Oil has completely drained and the new Filter is in place, the technician adds the recommended type and amount of fresh Oil to the Engine..
Checking Oil levels and quality: After adding the new Oil, the technician checks the Oil level using the vehicle’s dipstick. They may also inspect the Oil visually to ensure it is clean and of the correct consistency.
Resetting the Oil Change indicator: If your Mercedes-Benz has an Oil Change Indicator System, the technician will reset it to ensure accurate monitoring of future Oil Change intervals.

It’s important to note that the specific procedures and steps may vary depending on the Mercedes-Benz model, year, and service requirements. It’s recommended to refer to the vehicle’s Owner’s Manual or speak to one of our qualified Mercedes-Benz technicians for specific instructions and guidelines for your particular vehicle.
